Potential replacements for Kasper Schmeichel at Celtic

Kasper Schmeichel may have played his last game as a professional after suffering a shoulder injury that requires surgery.

The Denmark international last featured on 22nd February and will miss his country's World Cup play-off tie against North Macedonia at the end of March.

With his 40th birthday approaching, Schmeichel has conceded that he may be forced to call time on his career, ending his two-year spell at Celtic.

We take a look at what options the Bhoys might explore as a replacement...

Stefan Ortega

There were strong rumours linking Stefan Ortega to Glasgow during the January window and there is a realistic possibility that Celtic could renew their interest this summer.

Ortega, 33, joined Manchester City from Arminia Bielefeld in 2022 before signing for Nottingham Forest on a short-term deal this winter.

The German shot-stopper is out of contract at the City Ground at the end of the season, presenting the perfect opportunity for Celtic to pull off a shrewd free transfer.

Illan Meslier

Out of favour at Elland Road, French goalie Illan Meslier is likely to leave Leeds United after the conclusion of this campaign.

Still just 26, Meslier was considered to be a future France number one but he has not featured between the sticks since March 2025 after being axed by manager Daniel Farke.

With age on his side, there is till time for Meslier to get his career back on track and, given his contract expires next summer, Leeds will be keen to get a clean break when this June rolls around.

Sam Johnstone

Former England international Sam Johnstone would fit the profile of recent Celtic goalkeepers and could be available for a gettable fee ahead of next season.

The Bhoys have employed the services of Schmeichel, Joe Hart and Fraser Forster in recent years, all of whom had extensive experience in the Premier League before featuring between the sticks at Celtic Park.

Johnstone, despite a brief stint as a starter, has predominantly played second choice to Jose Sa since making the move to Wolves from Crystal Palace in 2024.

Staring down the barrel of relegation to the Championship, there is little chance that Wolves will be able to recoup the £10m that they shelled out on the 33-year-old and could accept a lower bid in the hope of funding an instant return to the Premier League.
