Three-time champion Phil Mickelson withdraws from the Masters

Phil Mickelson has announced that he won't be playing at this year's Masters due to personal reasons.

The three-time champion had been scheduled to make a return to competitive golf at Augusta National for golf's most prestigious tournament, which is set to commence on Thursday 9th April.

However, in a statement on social media, Mickelson confirmed that he will be withdrawing from the competition and taking an extended break from the sport.

Mickelson wrote: "Unfortunately, I will not play in the Masters Tournament next week and will be out for an extended period of time as my family continues to navigate a personal health matter.

"I have great respect for Augusta National Golf Club and it is definitely the most special week of the year.

"I wish everyone the best of luck and will be watching."

Mickelson has missed the bulk of the 2026 season so far and made his first appearance of the year on the LIV Golf circuit in South Africa a fortnight ago.

The 55-year-old, who triumphed at Augusta National in 2004, 2006 and 2010, would have been making his 33rd start at the Masters, with former winners receiving a lifetime invitation to compete in the tournament.

In 2023, Mickelson produced his best result at the Masters since 2015, finished tied second behind champion Jon Rahm. In last year's edition, the six-time major champion failed to make the cut for the first time since 2016, shooting five over par.

Despite struggling on the major stage in 2025, with a T56 finish at the Open Championship his best result last year, Mickelson reflected positively on his campaign with LIV Golf and had expressed his excitement for the season ahead.

“Last year was a good year for me,” Mickelson stated in a LIV press conference in January.

“I started to play well. Had a couple of good chances, which was exciting and motivating for me.

"Playing against this many great players each week is difficult but it’s exciting. I love the challenge. Heading into 2026, I’ve very optimistic and excited what the year may bring.”

Mickelson's absence from the field at the 2026 Masters means two-time champions Bubba Watson and Scottie Scheffler will be the tournament's most decorated flagbearers.
