The Open: Best-backed players at Royal Birkdale

Take a look at the best-backed players for the 154th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale.

The year's final major is shaping up to be a fascinating event from a betting perspective, with Scottie Scheffler's 7/1 the biggest price the world number one as been since the 2024 Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Rory McIlroy, whose form has been quietly solid throughout the season, with two top-10s and two top-20s in the five events since his Masters win, has kept himself lightly raced as he chases down majors and is vying for favouritism.

The ever-popular Tommy Fleetwood will be even more buoyed by support than usual as he returns to his native Southport in a bid for a first major. Fleetwood is enjoying an improved run of form, finishing no worse than T14 in his last five outings, and his recent form figures at The Open read: T12-2-T33-T4-T10-MC-T16.

Indeed, Fleetwood represents the best-backed player to lift the Claret Jug, taking nearly 10% of all stakes.

McIlroy is behind with 7.9% and the in-form Matt Fitzpatrick is third with 6.8%.

Fitzpatrick has enjoyed the best season of his career with three wins on the PGA Tour. Fitzpatrick was cruelly denied the Players Championship in March, holding a one-shot lead going down the 17th before seeing a two-shot swing on the final two holes. The Yorkshireman bounced back superbly, however, winning the Valspar Championship and a second RBC Heritage either side of a T19 at the Masters.

Fitzpatrick then went back-to-back, landing the Zurich Classic alongside brother Alex. After a slight dip in form, Fitzpatrick's last four appearances have seen him finish solo second, 22nd, solo fourth and T3, and on the back of a T4 at Royal Portrush last year, looks well primed for a tilt at the Claret Jug.

Justin Rose is as well backed as ever, despite up and down form in 2026. Rose's win at the Farmers Insurance Open came the week after a missed cut at the American Express and before a run of T37-MC-MC over his next three events. Rose was T3 at the Masters, but since then has been T65-T45-T10-T12-MC-T11-T25. The Englishman tends to raise his game for the majors, and returns to the scene of one of his most iconic moments, where he holed out for eagle on the 72nd hole to finish T4 as an amateur in 1998.

VIktor Hovland rounds off the top five with the improving Norwegian showing signs of good form heading into the year's final major. After a poor run of results, Hovland was solo third at the Canadian Open before missing the cut at the US Open. More recently, however, Hovland has beaten Scottie Scheffler at the Travelers Championship and was T13 at the Scottish Open.
