Olympiacos reach agreement to sign wantaway Aston Villa winger

Olympiacos have reached a verbal agreement to sign Aston Villa winger Leon Bailey on a permanent deal, according to reports.

Bailey, 29, has been the subject of interest from a number of clubs this summer, most intensely from fellow Premier League outfit Hull City, but a move failed to materialise prior to the end of the English transfer window.

The Jamaican, who joined Aston Villa from Bayer Leverkusen in 2021 for around £30m, is surplus to requirements at Villa Park, as Unai Emery's side continue to overhaul their squad this summer.

Despite joining Serie A side Roma on a season-long loan deal last summer, Bailey returned to Villa Park in January and was a part of their squad that won the UEFA Europa League - the Villans' first major trophy in 30 years - scoring in their 3-0 aggregate win over Lille in the round of 16.

Despite failing to achieve a move away from Villa Park by the end of the English window, The Athletic reported that a number of clubs across nations with windows extending beyond yesterday's English deadline - such as Saudi Arabia and Turkey - were exploring a move to secure his signature.

However, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano via X, Greek giants Olympiacos have reached a verbal agreement to sign the Jamaica international.

He reported that a permanent move has been agreed with the 29-year-old on a contract running until 2029, with the green light given by Aston Villa for the move to take place.

Bailey is said to be on his way to Athens to complete a medical ahead of the move, with various outfits reporting a fee in the region of €8.5m.

Since joining the Villans five years ago, Bailey has featured 163 times across all competitions, scoring 23 goals and registering 25 assists, as Villa enjoyed a period of unprecedented success.

The 2023/24 season stands out in particular, with Bailey netting 14 times and registering 14 assists across all competitions, as he led his side to UEFA Champions League qualification for the first time in 40 years.

Unlike England, the Greek transfer window runs until 15th September, allowing ample time for this move to be finalised.
