One of the Premier League's most colourful owners, Evangelos Marinakis is not shy of the headlines as he aims to restore Nottingham Forest as one of England's leading clubs.
The son of Greek shipowner and politician Miltiadis Marinakis, Evangelos Marinakis is a Greek businessman and investor who built his wealth in the shipping industry.
Founder and chairman of the international shipping company Capital Maritime & Trading Corp, Marinakis has also invested in the media and bought two of Greece's most popular newspapers - Ta Nea and To Vima. In 2019, he launched a new television channel, One Channel, in Greece.
First venturing into football ownership by purchasing a majority stake in Greek Super League side Olympiacos in 2010, Marinakis expanded his portfolio in the sport by acquiring Nottingham Forest in 2017.
Restoring Forest in the Premier League, Marinakis oversaw a period of sustained Olympiacos dominance from 2011 to 2017, where they won seven successive league titles. The club have won a total of 11 titles under his stewardship.
In 2024, Olympiacos became the first Greek club to win a European trophy as they triumphed in the 2024 Conference League final.
In November 2023, Marinakis completed the takeover of Portuguese outfit Rio Ave.
Marinakis is 57 years old and was born on 30th July 1967.
As of July 2025, Marinakis has an estimated net worth of $5.1 billion, according to Forbes.
Marinakis accrued his wealth through the shipping industry. Founding Capital Maritime Trading Corp. in 2005, the company has evolved into a multi-billion pound enterprise.
Asides from his football interests, Marinakis also owns Alter Ego Media, a prominent media group in Greece.
He owns two super yachts, including the £20m Amore Mio II.
It's fair to say Nottingham Forest have been a club transformed since Evangelos Marinakis assumed control of the club in 2017.
Upon completion of his £50 million takeover, Marinakis vowed to restore the two-times European Cup winners to the Premier League.
Understandably there was a great degree of scepticism. After all, Forest hadn't basked in the riches of England's top-flight since 1999 and they had only just avoided relegation to League One on goal difference prior to the Greek's arrival.
So when the East Midlands club achieved promotion to the Premier League by winning the Championship play-off final under Steve Cooper in 2022, Marinakis' promise had been fulfilled.
Nottingham Forest have since reestablished themselves as Premier League regulars under Marinakis' impassioned watch and, having qualified for Europe for the first time since 1996, there's scope to suggest a prosperous future lies ahead.
However, Forest's rise hasn't been without controversy.
Marinakis was accused of match-fixing in the Greek Super League at the time of his takeover. It was a charge he denied and he was later cleared in 2018.
In September 2024, he was found guilty of improper conduct and banned for five matches for spitting on the floor as match officials walked past following Forest's 1-0 Premier League defeat to Fulham.
Marinakis was also responsible for an astonishing social media attack on Stuart Attwell on the club's official X channel. The post called Attwell's integrity into question after Forest were not awarded penalties in a defeat to Everton.
Towards the end of the 2024/25 campaign, Marinakis stormed the pitch and was involved in a heated exchange with manager Nuno Espirito Santo following a 2-2 draw against Leicester City which scuppered Forest's UEFA Champions League hopes.
