Established as a professional competition in 1979 and rebranded in 2006, the Greek Super League crowns the national champion in Greece each year.
Greek football was played at regional and amateur level from 1905 to 1979, at which point the existing national league was professionalised.
Since the 1979/80 season, only five teams have won the championship, with Olympiacos by far the most successful, with 27 titles with Panathinaikos second on eight.
