Next Motherwell Manager Contenders

John McGlynn

A third consecutive PFA Scotland Manager of the Year nomination shows just how successful John McGlynn has been at Falkirk.

Back-to-back promotions and a top fix finish in the top-flight on a relatively low budget prove the Falkirk manager would certainly have the attributes to build on the success Motherwell have had in 2025/26.

At the age of 64, it will be interesting to see if McGlynn views Motherwell as the right step in his managerial career or whether he feels comfortable enough to continue to keep making progress at Falkirk.

Jimmy Thelin

Motherwell could be the perfect project for Jimmy Thelin to relaunch his managerial career.

The Swede experienced a number of ups and downs during his spell at Pittodrie, with the highest of highs undoubtedly coming when Aberdeen won a first Scottish Cup for 35 years by beating Celtic in May 2025.

A disappointing start to the 2025/26 campaign saw Thelin sacked with the club struggling in eighth place and Thelin will surely be wanting to get back into football as soon as possible.

Scott Brown

After a decorated playing career, Scott Brown has already experienced management in England and Scotland, so will feel he has developed the skills to succeed in the top-flight.

Brown led Fleetwood Town to the fourth round of the FA Cup for the first time in their history during his first season in charge, but ultimately paid the price for a disappointing start to the following campaign.

It was also a hugely positive start to life at Ayr United as he steered the club clear of relegation and secured a third-place finish during his first full season in charge.

At the end of March, it was announced the former Scotland captain had stood down from his role after their winless run as extended to nine games following a 3-0 defeat against Raith Rovers.

The 40-year-old will still feel he has plenty to offer and it will be fascinating to see if the Motherwell board identify Brown as someone who can take the club to the next level.
