Betting has been suspended on the next permanent Chelsea manager after the club announced the appointment of Xabi Alonso.
A statement read: "Chelsea Football Club is delighted to announce the appointment of Xabi Alonso as Manager of the Men’s Team.
"The Spaniard will begin his role on July 1, 2026, having agreed a four-year contract at Stamford Bridge."
Liam Rosenior lasted just 106 days in West London before being dismissed following a run of five consecutive defeats.
Calum McFarlane has since taken charge until the end of the season but Chelsea have been casting their net far and wide as they seek a long-term successor for Rosenior ahead of the start of pre-season.
Outgoing Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola had emerged as the early favourite following the news that he will move on from his current position at the end of the season.
However, former Real Madrid boss Alonso has subsequently surged to the top of the next Chelsea manager betting.
The Spaniard was sacked eight months into his role at the Santiago Bernabeu and he has been linked with a number positions, including a return to his former club Liverpool.
Chelsea have taken their time in their pursuit of a new leader, but the club have home now confirmed the appointment of the 44-year-old, despite reports that Liverpool were prepared to hire the former Reds midfielder in the event that Arne Slot was sacked.
