Liverpool have officially announced the British-record signing of Alexander Isak from Newcastle.
A club statement read: "Isak joins the Premier League champions as their new No.9 on a long-term contract, which he signed on deadline day after successfully passing a medical."
Upon signing for the Reds, the Swedish striker said: "It’s been a long journey to get here. But I’m super-happy to be a part of this team, this club and everything it stands for. It’s something I’m proud of and I’m really looking forward to it.
“I’m just happy it’s done and that I can get back to work. I’m looking forward to seeing my teammates and the fans, and getting back out there.”
The saga of the window has finally drawn to a close after Liverpool announced the club and British record signing of Swedish striker Alexander Isak.
The 25-year-old expressed his desire to leave Newcastle back in July, but the club’s not-for-sale stance complicated what was already a difficult deal for the Reds to complete.
The overarching feeling was that it would take a fee in the region of £150m for the Magpies to even consider Isak’s departure. As the saga rumbled on, however, there was an acceptance amongst those at the club that the forward would not be willing to reintegrate with the side, ultimately driving the price down and putting the ball in Liverpool’s court.
One thing that was made clear was Newcastle’s need for two capable replacements before considering the sale of Isak, having also lost Callum Wilson on a free transfer.
Despite numerous attempts to recruit in the forward departments, targeting the likes of Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Hugo Ekitike and Benjamin Sesko, it took the club until the 30th August to secure the signature of a centre forward, signing Nick Woltemade for a fee in the region of £70m.
This paved the way for Liverpool to make a renewed attempt to sign Alexander Isak, having had a £110m bid rejected earlier in the window.
Liverpool never looked elsewhere in the striker market, nor did Isak entertain the prospect of joining anyone but the Reds, and now both parties have there wish.
A huge transfer window that puts Arne Slot’s side in a favourable position to defend their Premier League title.
