Ipswich Town plot ambitious move for Brazilian international

Ipswich Town have opened talks to sign a Brazilian international defender, according to reports.

The Tractor Boys are showing clear ambition after making a return to the Premier League and details released by transfer guru Fabrizio Romano claim that they are keen on bringing Lille stopper Alexsandro to Portman Road.

It's already been quite the summer for Ipswich after manager Kieran McKenna departed the club; replaced by Gary O'Neil.

O'Neil, who last managed Strasbourg in Ligue 1, looks as if he'll dip straight into the French market to help his new side defy quotes of 4/6 to suffer immediate relegation back to the Championship.

"EXCL: Ipswich Town make initial approach to sign Brazilian defender Alexsandro from Lille," Romano posted on his X account on Monday morning.

"#ITFC among clubs keen on the defender with talks underway for fee around €30m."

Ipswich are expected to face stern competition to sign the 26-year-old centre back for the reported fee of around £25.9m. Alexsandro moved to Europe in 2019, having initially started his career in Flamengo's academy.

Stints in the Portuguese lower leagues eventually led him to reach the Primeira Liga with Chavez, being named in the team of the season during their promotion season. This attracted the attention of several European top-flight clubs with Lille winning the race to secure his signature on a four-year contract.

The centre back received his first call-up for Brazil when Carlo Ancelotti was announced as national team manager in May 2025, starting three World Cup qualifiers against Ecuador, Paraguay and Bolivia.

Alexsandro's campaign was severely hampered by injuries throughout 2025/26, missing 22 total matches and limiting him to just seven Ligue 1 starts.
