How does the Scottish Premiership split work?

The 2025/26 Scottish Premiership season has arguably been one of the most fascinating in recent years, and the final few months promise an enticing three-team title race.

Barring a dramatic demise from Falkirk, the six teams set to form the top half of the split and six teams set to form the bottom half of the split are all but confirmed, with Hearts, Rangers and Celtic set to battle it out for the league title.

Below, we take a look at how the Scottish Premiership split works and when the post-split fixtures will be announced.

How does the Scottish Premiership split work?

The Scottish Premiership split takes place after 33 games, in which the top six teams and bottom six teams are divided for the remaining five games of the league campaign.

This means that, from Matchweek 34 to Matchweek 38, the top six teams play each other once more, as do the bottom six teams.

Once the split is confirmed after 33 games, a team can't leave their half, irrespective of the points tally. In the 2024/25 Scottish Premiership term, St Mirren accumulated 50 points and Hearts recorded 52 points, but because St Mirren finished in the top half of the split and Hearts in the bottom, St Mirren finished sixth and St Mirren seventh.

Additionally, if a team has had 17 home games before the split, they would expect to play two more in the split to take them to 19 in a 38-game season, while those teams who play 16 home games after 33 games would expect three more in the split.

However, given that the SPFL do not know which sides will be in which half of the table at the start of the season, it can sometimes prove difficult to even out home and away affairs.

When are the Scottish Premiership post-split fixtures announced?

The post-split fixtures will be announced "as soon as possible following fixture round 33", according to the SPFL. While we don't know which teams will face who and where, they have revealed the proposed dates for each Matchweek.

Scottish Premiership post-split fixture dates

  • Matchweek 34: April 25th / April 26th
  • Matchweek 35: May 2nd / May 3rd
  • Matchweek 36: May 9th / May 10th
  • Matchweek 37: May 12th / May 13th
  • Matchweek 38: May 16th (top half) / May 17th (bottom half)
