One runner that catches the eye over at the Curragh on Wednesday evening is last-time-out winner Allsortz who was making it two wins from his last three starts.
He’s really got the hang of things as a three-year-old and that win last time out was his first run on soft ground, so there could easily be more to come on this surface given that he’s only gone up 2lb for that career best success.
A high draw is often an advantage on the straight track at the Curragh, particularly when there is cut in the ground and it is also a track that front runners do well on as a general rule so if he can get out in front, he could be hard to pass with the yard running at a 24% strike-rate over the last fortnight.
19:10 Ripon - Donna Nook @ 10/1
It often pays to be positioned prominently on the round course at Ripon and one runner that may be capable of gaining an uncontested lead on Wednesday evening is Donna Nook.
David O’Meara’s filly only has one win from her 21 career starts but she’s gone close off much higher marks than what she competes off here and she’s been knocking firmly on the door so far this campaign.
Having been beaten roughly a length on her return to action, she was then only denied by a neck second time out and while she’s not quite been at the same level twice since, a drop down to an easier mile (last two runs have been over extended miles on stiff tracks) could be the key for her, particularly if she takes to the new headgear combination.
Furthermore, David O’Meara’s stable is starting to really turn a corner with a treble over the weekend so that factor alone could see this filly improve and she’s lurking on a career-low mark at present.
Without much pace in the race and her main pace rival drawn in a wider stall, Danny Tudhope may be able to boss this contest from the front and she looks like a big each-way player in a race in which bet365 are offering an extra place.
20:12 Ripon - Wen Moon @ 15/8
With a fair amount of rain (up to 12mm) in the forecast for Tuesday/Wednesday, it’s fair to assume the ground at Ripon is going to be on the softer side of good by Wednesday evening and one that is going to relish getting back on to a slower surface is Wen Moon.
This son of Mehmas had a tough campaign last year but the one time he got his ground at the end of the campaign at Musselburgh, he managed to end the losing run and to get his head back in front.
The six-year-old was always going to need his return outing but was back in form when posting a much improved effort at Carlisle since on ground that was always going to be quicker than ideal and he’s become dangerously well treated on his placed form from 18 months ago.
This previous course winner was a non-runner on quick ground at Carlisle at the weekend but should get his conditions now and the yard’s horses are flying this campaign, running at a 21% strike-rate this Flat season.
