Heavenly Heather is being underestimated in the Beverley Bullet for trainer Tracey Waggott.
The improving five-year-old hasn’t looked back since winning a 7f handicap on All-Weather Finals day at Newcastle from 19lb wrong last April and has established herself as one of the best older sprinters of her sex this year.
The daughter of Shamardal built on her good second to Jakajaro in a hot handicap at York in May by getting closer to that rival when sixth in the King Charles III Stakes at Royal Ascot.
That performance just about sets the standard in this field and this mare remains unexposed on the grass after only seven turf starts.
She was flying too high in the Nunthorpe last time and should relish the greater emphasis on stamina Beverley presents. She stays further than this and handles soft ground, so a big run is expected.
14:35 Goodwood - Purosangue @ 7/1
Robert Cowell is a master at revitalising sprinters who have lost their way and Purosangue looks primed to notch a first victory for the trainer.
Easier ground is ideal for Purosangue, who hasn’t got those conditions since his encouraging fourth at Pontefract on his stable debut in April, a race which reads well on the clock.
Purosangue is 4lb lower now, despite the fact he’s shaped well on two runs since, and he makes significant appeal off a career-low BHA rating returned to the scene of his best performance as a juvenile.
He proved he could act on Goodwood’s downhill 5f when beaten a neck by top-class sprinter Big Evs in the 2023 Molecomb on soft terrain.
This looks a cracking opportunity after he was frustratingly balloted out of a similar race at York last Saturday.
15:30 Cork - Spinning Around @ 11/1
Spinning Around has been a hard-luck story on two of her past three runs and she rates a solid each-way play in the Coolmore Stud Little Big Bear Stakes at Cork.
The Donnacha O’Brien-trained three-year-old was drawn in the wrong place when eighth in the Sandringham, but proved she was worth following by beating the second filly of the 11 on her side, 17th Darn Hot Gallop, by nearly 10 lengths.
Spinning Around proved she could cut it at Listed level when a respectable fifth in the Cairn Rouge Stakes at Killarney next time and built on that when dropping down to 7f in the Platinum Stakes over this course and distance on her latest run.
That was an effort worth upgrading as the pace was steady for much of the contest and the winner was always prominent, while my selection needed to wait for the gaps from off the speed and finished rapidly to bag second.
There is every chance this bigger-field set-up will ensure a stronger pace for Spinning Around to chase. Granted that scenario, this improving filly will be bang there under Gavin Ryan.
