15:00 Newmarket - Red Spells Danger @ 13/2

Red Spells Danger has been improving although he wasn’t seen to the best effect when losing out to the re-opposing Thunder Call at York last time out.

The son of Cotai Glory was given too much to do on the Knavesmire but he was closing all the way to the line and he’s now 2lb better off for a half-length defeat.

He shapes like the stiffer finish of Newmarket’s July course is going to suit having stayed on strongly last time out and the market confidence behind him that day counts for plenty.

At nearly twice the price of Thunder Call, he looks like the value play in the race with bet365 offering a standout 13/2 with four places on offer.

16:10 Newmarket - Madam Secretary @ 9/1

Aidan O’Brien won this contest with a subsequent Group 1 winner back in 2015 and he has an interesting recruit for this year’s renewal of the fillies’ maiden.

Madam Secretary is the horse in question. This well bred daughter of Wootton Bassett is a full-sister to Amadeus Mozart, who was a juvenile winner over this trip, and this filly shaped like she would appreciate further when third over the extended six furlongs at Listowel on debut.

That form has already been boosted by the winner performing with a credit in a Group 2 and both the second and fifth winning their next time out starts.

While this contest certainly demands a bigger performance from the filly, O’Brien’s juveniles often improve markedly from their first run to second.

Considering that the short-priced favourite is making her debut and the second favourite has found one too good in weaker races than this on her last couple of starts, the value play looks like being Madam Secretary.

17:20 Newmarket - Final Night @ 11/1

John Butler has his string in fine form at present, running at a remarkable 35% strike-rate (7-20) in the last fortnight, and he has a fascinating contender for Newmarket’s finale on day one.

Final Night has been in the form of his life this term, winning at Kempton before narrow defeats on the Rowley Mile course and he had a tough task from rear in a competitive Epsom handicap on Oaks day.

Not much went right at Epsom, with inference following a slow start, but he was only beaten by three lengths and this is a more straightforward track.

He’s going to appreciate getting back on quicker ground and with the yard flying, he should remain competitive.

Phill Anderson hit the frame with two each-way picks from three selections for bet365 at Royal Ascot (Great Acclaim 16/1 and Outback Heat 9/1). He also returned a profit with a 33/1 second at the Curragh last month and got a winner on the board with Royal Zabeel (SP 15/2) on Saturday.
