Newmarket Horse Racing Betting Tips for Friday 10th July

The second day of the Newmarket July festival takes place on Friday and it’s a Group 1 afternoon, with the Falmouth Stakes being the feature of a fantastic seven-race card.

Racing Post tipster Graeme Rodway returns with his best bets for the day from Newmarket and reckons that there could be an upset in the big one.

13:50 Newmarket - Heraldry @ 10/3

The 1m2f handicap (13:50) kicks things off at Newmarket and the one to back is Heraldry, who is bred to be classier than his current mark of 89 and should be capable of showing it now up in trip.

Heraldry is by Kingman and out of the Lingfield Oaks Trial winner Sherbet Lemon, who evidently stayed strongly, and that suggests Heraldry has been doing well to compete over a mile on recent starts.

He got up right near the line after looking in trouble when landing a mile maiden at Kempton in April, but didn’t get much luck when attempting to repeat the feat over the same trip at Windsor last month.

Heraldry simply couldn’t get a run until it was too late and, despite flying home when in the clear, he didn’t have enough time to get to the winner, Decade Of Time. He shaped like he desperately needed further on that occasion and now steps up to 1m2f for the first time, which should bring improvement.

John and Thady Gosden were among the winners at the July course on Thursday and William Buick is booked to ride Heraldry for the first time. There should be plenty more to come from the selection.

14:25 Newmarket - Ruby Moon @ 20/1

The Duchess of Cambridge Stakes (14:25) is a cracking race and all eyes will be on the Albany winner Libertango, who bids to get the better of the Queen Mary runner-up Senorita Bonita. However, the Royal Ascot formlines might be overturned because Ruby Moon is capable of improving further than those two.

The Richard and Peter Fahey-trained filly didn’t go to Royal Ascot because she hadn’t even made her debut by then, but she looked good when making a winning start at Carlisle. She travelled powerfully into that race just 16 days ago and put it to bed with a smart turn of foot to win by a length and a quarter.

That form is a world away from what is needed to win this, but she is priced accordingly and is definitely open to more improvement than the majority of these rivals given that she has run just once.

Ryan Moore is an eye-catching jockey booking for the stable and he wouldn’t be on board this massive outsider unless she had a chance. It’s worth having a punt on Ruby Moon at such generous odds.

15:35 Newmarket - Evolutionist @ 18/1

The Group 1 Falmouth Stakes (15:35) is the big race of the day and Precise is going to be a warm order following her hard-fought victories in the Irish 1,000 Guineas and the Coronation Stakes. However, she is often workmanlike rather than impressive and a mile on this fast track may be too sharp for her this time.

It’s worth taking her on and the one to back is Evolutionist, who finished second in the 1,000 Guineas on the Rowley Mile in May and she was ahead of Precise on that occasion. A reproduction of that form would give the selection a strong chance and she can be forgiven for her disappointing run in France last time.

That came in the Prix de Diane at Chantilly over further and she was never going. She finished only eighth and it definitely wasn’t her form. Maybe she was still feeling the effects of her previous hard run.

Returning to the ups-and-downs of Newmarket, on her favoured quick ground, will be ideal for Evolutionist and she can add another good effort to her form that reads 132 on both tracks here.
