It’s day two of Newbury’s Super Sprint meeting on Saturday with the feature race set to go off at 15:37 as the fourth race on a seven-race card.
The Racing Post’s Phill Anderson has picked out three selections for the best of the action from Newbury, including one in the Super Sprint Stakes.
15:02 Newbury - Mitbaahy @ 10/1
15:37 Newbury - Sky Secret @ 15/2
17:20 Newbury - Velvet Rhythm @ 9/4
15:02 Newbury - Mitbaahy @ 10/1
It doesn’t look like a strong renewal of the Group 3 Hackwood Stakes and with bet365 paying three places rather than two on the seven-runner contest, it might be worth looking for an each-way player.
The one that fits the bill is Mitbaahy who arrives on the back of a promising fifth of 27 in the Wokingham at Ascot last time.
Charlie Hills’ charge missed more than a year off the track before his reappearance at Doncaster in March when last of 12 but he showed why connections have persisted with him at the Royal meeting, finishing his race off strongly after a slow start.
The slow starts are a regular occurrence and that’s the main concern on Saturday in a small field but he’s the one with a bit of star quality in this line-up, having taken out a Group 2 the season before last, and he also has course form to his name, having won a Group 3 here a few years back.
With his latest outing being a first since a wind procedure, there’s a chance he’ll come on from his Wokingham effort and he looks like the value play at 10/1 each-way.
15:37 Newbury - Sky Secret @ 15/2
The Super Sprint is Saturday’s feature race at Newbury and it’s a slight surprise that Clive Cox’s name is yet to get on the roll of honour given that the trainer excels with both sprinters and juveniles.
That could all change on Saturday with Sky Secret who arrives on the back of a maiden success. He shaped with promise while showing signs of inexperience on his debut at Leicester before getting his head in front back at that venue at the second time of asking.
He looked all speed that day and his pedigree suggests as much, laden with five-furlong winners so this test ought to suit. Furthermore, middle-to-high is where you want to be as far as the draw is concerned with the last six renewals all won from stalls between 10 and 21 (Sky Secret drawn 14).
The booking of veteran jockey PJ McDonald can also be seen as a positive given that backing all of his rides for the yard would have yielded a small level stakes profit down the years and with bet365 offering a whopping five places, the suggestion is an each-way bet.
17:20 Newbury - Velvet Rhythm @ 9/4
Velvet Rhythm might not have the attractive profile of some of these having done all of her winning in fillies’ handicaps in the north but she looks like a filly going places and seems on a strong upward trajectory.
Her latest success at Catterick is worth marking up having raced keenly in the closing stages and while it took her a little while to get going, she was ultimately good value for the winning margin, pulling away in the closing stages.
While she’s up another 5lb, there’s a suspicion she only just does enough and with more to come, the daughter of Awtaad looks like the one to beat.

Phill Anderson hit the frame with two each-way picks from three selections for bet365 at Royal Ascot (Great Acclaim 16/1 & Outback Heat 9/1). He also returned a profit with a 33/1 second at the Curragh last month and got a winner on the board with Royal Zabeel (SP 15/2) a fortnight ago.
