It’s day one of Newbury’s two-day Super Sprint meeting on Friday, with the Listed Rose Bowl Stakes (16:10) the feature of the six-race card.

Experience could count for plenty in Newbury’s opener on Friday afternoon and one that has shown plenty of ability so far is Cilician.
The gelding stayed on in strong fashion when just failing to get up on debut and improved on that level of form when finishing 11th of 21 in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot.
That’s an effort worth marking up having been drawn low on a week when the near side (high draws) were benefitting and while the winner from that contest was also drawn low, that Ballydoyle representative (Great Barrier Reef) could turn out to be something out of the ordinary.
Cicilian then had to do the donkey work himself at Sandown, running well for a long way before getting lonely out in front, wandering around in the closing stages but he shaped like this less demanding finish would suit and he could still be progressing.
Given that he already sets a reasonable standard on form and with a high draw, that is often beneficial on Newbury’s straight track, Brian Meehan’s gelding looks like the one to beat.
16:10 Newbury - Nabati @ 11/10
It looks like an open renewal of Friday’s feature contest but Nabati could be worth chancing after his impressive debut at Yarmouth.
This 850,000gns purchase only won a four-runner maiden at Yarmouth but he showed a really smart turn of foot to put the race to bed from the two to the one furlong pole and he was good value for the winning margin that day, merely pushed out in the closing stages.
That performance is probably worth upgrading given that he was held up in a slowly run contest and Charlie Appleby’s representatives can take giant strides from their first run to second.
With the yard in flying form, this completely unexposed sort should be firmly in the mix up in class provided he does take a step forward.
16:45 Newbury - Lightning Glory @ 7/2
The three-year-old handicap looks like the betting race of the day but Lightning Glory could be hard to beat after a recent career best effort at Southwell.
This filly had shown plenty of promise in maidens before a lesser run when stepped up in trip at Lingfield but she bounced back from that run back at a mile on handicap debut on the all-weather last week.
She lost her position two out when slightly hampered by a rival on her outside but rallied gamely and finished off her race in eye-catching fashion to pick up second, and the winner did that form no harm when hitting the frame at Windsor on Monday.
Crucially, Lightning Glory is 3lb well-in for that all-weather effort and if she can build on that run, there’s every chance she’ll be firmly in the mix with the yard running at a 23% strike-rate in recent weeks.
