It is Arc weekend in France and Racing Post Tipster Jonny Pearson is on hand to run you through his NAP and next best selection for day one on Saturday.
It is a high quality card at Longchamp with two Group 1 races and three Group 2s. Superstar stayer Scandinavia is attempting to win a ninth race in a row in the Prix du Cadran, and there is plenty of UK and Irish interest in the Prix de Royallieu.
Waardah - 4/1
Rider | Callum Rodriguez |
Trainer | Owen Burrows |
Owner | ARM Racing |
Age | 4 |
Overall Form | 18-231 |
Our NAP is the Owen Burrows-trained Waardah in the Group 1 Prix de Royallieu. She heads to Longchamp in good form having been successful at Doncaster last time out.
This is a competitive race and she will need to improve to win, but she shaped as if there is still more to come when last seen.
Having only had nine career starts, Waardah is entitled to be improving still, and a win at the highest level is surely achievable for the progressive filly.
She has been in the first three on all her starts this season, improving each time and achieving a higher Racing Post Rating on each occasion.
Sunly is likely to be favourite and holds strong claims, with this looking an easier race than her last two starts, but she isn’t a world beater and definitely looks vulnerable.
And with this being the case, Waardah can take advantage and add another Group 1 success to Owen Burrows’ CV.

Phineas - 9/4
Rider | Maxime Guyon |
Trainer | A & L Fabre |
Owner | Wertheimer & Frere |
Age | 4 |
Overall Form | 3-1111 |
Our Next best bet is in the Group 2 Prix Dollar and it is Phineas who has our vote of confidence.
He was gelded following a third-placed effort in a Listed race last year, and since reappearing has been successful on all four of his starts.
Phineas won a Group 3 over this course and distance last time and that is the best form on offer. He triumphed by more than three lengths that day and is improving with each run.
Wimbledon Hawkeye, who was just touched off in the Irish Champion Stakes last time, and last year’s winner First Look are obvious threats, and that underlines what a competitive race this is.
This is a step up in Grade for Phineas, but with the arc of improvement he has been on this season, there is every reason this can continue, and if he turns up in the same form as when last seen, he can come out on top.
Jonny Pearson is a handicapper for the Racing Post and recently tipped 15/2 winner Krasimir on Irish Champions weekend.
