It’s French Oaks day at Chantilly on Sunday and Phill Anderson of the Racing Post supplies us with his best bets on the card.

The Racing Post’s Phill Anderson has picked out three selections for the best of the action at Chantilly this Sunday, including one in the French Oaks.

With a dry forecast at Chantilly over the weekend, the ground could quicken up by Sunday afternoon and those who are proven in such conditions have to be high on the shortlist for the French Oaks.

The one that makes the most appeal is the 1,000 Guineas runner-up, Evolutionist. This Night Of Thunder filly did best of those in the low numbers for the Newmarket Classic last month and while her pedigree doesn’t necessarily suggest this new distance is going to suit, the way she finishes off her races offers plenty of hope for her seeing out the French Oaks distance.

The form of the 1,000 Guineas couldn’t have worked out much better with the winner and seventh finishing runner-up and first respectively in the Irish equivalent last month and that’s arguably the strongest form on offer in this contest.

Furthermore, there’s also potential for an uncontested lead in this contest with stall five looking ideal for the filly.

The unbeaten Diamond Necklace is an obvious danger but she looks short enough in the betting at odds on and the French 1,000 Guineas form has yet to be tested. Aidan O’Brien’s filly makes the market for an each-way selection and Evolutionist appeals at 7/1.

Another British raider has solid claims on the card in the 1m4f Listed contest.

Tiffany for Sir Mark Prescott gained a second Pattern success at Baden Baden in 2024 before two placed efforts at Group 1 level and the mare showed she retains all of her ability in two Group 1 seconds last season, the latest behind recent Coronation Cup winner, Bay City Roller.

While she’s making her seasonal reappearance in this contest, this is her easiest assignment for some time and she also has a good record fresh.

Given that progeny of Farhh generally improve with age, and the fact that Prescott has travelled her for a first run of the campaign, there’s every chance she’s going to be a tough nut to crack down at Listed level.

17:03 Chantilly - Sahlan @ 5/4

Sahlan may not have fired on his reappearance in the Lockinge at Newbury last month but if you can put a line through that run when he reportedly had an interrupted preparation, then he has outstanding form claims dropping in class to Group 3 level on Sunday.

Francis-Henri Graffard’s colt got the better of Rosallion in the Prix du Moulin last season which is clearly the best form on offer in this contest before a particularly eye-catching run in the Breeders’ Cup Mile when beaten two lengths at the end of the campaign.

That was an effort worth marking up having struggled to get a good early position around the tight turns of Del Mar and it’s another piece of form that is working out nicely.

If he returns to anything like that level of form, the rest of these will need to significantly raise their game and with the drying ground also in his favour, there are very few negatives for this Al Shaqab colt.
