Bradford to beat Cambridge @ 19/20
Bradford City had their first taste of defeat on Saturday, losing 2-0 at Plymouth Argyle after starting the campaign with back-to-back wins and progression to the League Cup third round.
It could have been different at Home Park, had Will Swan found his shooting flippers, but the Bantams were deservedly beaten; I back them to bounce back defiantly with a win here, though.
I like that Graham Alexander’s side have a multitude of threats, from flying wing-backs in Josh Neufville, in particular, goalscoring midfielders like Antoni Sarcevic, Adam Phillips and Bobby Pointon, second strikers like Swan and Kayden Jackson, and a target man in Jake Beesley.
Don’t get me wrong, I really like the progress Cambridge are making under Neil Harris, who I think is the most underrated manager in the division, but I think Bradford are at a different stage.
Huddersfield to beat Oxford @ 3/4
Huddersfield have enjoyed an excellent start to the season, with seven points from their first three games.
We’ve seen what Joe Taylor can do at this level before, particularly with Lincoln in 2023/24, and since then he’s found himself at times injured, losing a bit of confidence, possibly with the wrong role and/or in the wrong setup – so a real feather in Martin Drury’s cap is that he’s got the best out of his talisman.
Taylor was on fire in Saturday's 2-1 victory at Cambridge, constantly looking to get in behind and it caused so many issues for defences, so I’m not sure the likes of Michal Helik and Ciaron Brown will be able to live with him.
It doesn’t exactly help that the visitors haven’t played for 10 days, either, as Aaron Ramsey leads the post-relegation rebuild without an opportunity to recruit.
Grimsby to win at Accrington @ 19/20
Grimsby Town continued their unbeaten start with a 2-2 draw with Fleetwood at the weekend, and boss David Artell felt his side edged the contest.
It’s been a positive start for the Mariners, considering they’ve been hit by injuries, but one thing Artell gets spot on is not putting pressure on the returns, so that they only come back when they’re ready; this also creates the space for others to impress – while Jamie Walker was absent, for example, Cian Doyle has brought plenty of energy and craft in midfield.
I see Town continuing their unbeaten start with a victory at Accrington Stanley, who have just a solitary point to their name.
I actually really like their addition of Charlie Warren on loan from Bolton, but besides him and veteran Shaun Whalley, they’re a little bit dry on quality.
Bristol Rovers to beat Colchester @ 4/5
Bristol Rovers bounced back from their opening day 3-2 loss at York with back-to-back wins over Newport and Crawley.
After a 5-3 victory over the Exiles completed a high-scoring start to the season at both ends, Steve Evans would have been delighted with a clean sheet in the 2-0 victory at Broadfield, even if Bobby Kamwa could have been more ruthless on the counter-attack, and added to his one goal.
I’m expecting the latter manner of victory to become more common than the former, because Evans is so good at drilling his sides into an efficient unit.
Visitors Colchester moved onto seven points with back-to-back wins, but they’ve not had the toughest of opposition: they drew with likely strugglers Accrington Stanley on opening day, they beat an Oldham side playing with 10 men for the second half, then narrowly defeated bottom of the table Rochdale.
