Queens Park Rangers to beat Preston North End @ 3/4
It’s just one defeat for Queens Park Rangers from the first seven games of the season, with Julien Stephan’s side losing only to high-flyers Middlesbrough.
The R’s boast one of the top goalkeepers in the division in Pierce Charles, who has impressed with excellent distribution at Loftus Road, and a fine ball-playing defender in Ronnie Edwards.
They’ve changed shape slightly this year, with Harvey Vale playing just off Rumarn Burrell of late as opposed to last season’s two up top, and it’s given them a little bit more of a griphold on central areas without losing their core game principles.
Visitors Preston North End, on the other hand, are looking for a new manager after Paul Heckingbottom’s dismissal: ‘Hecky’ has been a reliable boss at this level over the years, and his exit arguably increases their chances of relegation as opposed to decreasing it.
Plymouth Argyle to beat Blackpool @ 6/4
After a slow start, Plymouth Argyle have flown up the League One standings at this early stage with back-to-back wins over South Yorkshire opposition, in Doncaster Rovers and Barnsley.
Tom Cleverley has responded to the loss of star striker Lorent Tolaj by playing replacement Will Evans just off target man Bim Pepple, and the former Mansfield man’s selfless industry has made them even more compact without the ball – even if he’s not quite as potent.
I do think that hands a lot more freedom to wide men Ronan Curtis and Oliver Irow, who can be a bit like a third forward at times with his expressive bursts in from the flank, and looks a tremendous talent from North London.
Blackpool have had a respectable start, but back-to-back away defeats at Barnsley and Reading, followed by dropped points at home to strugglers Bromley, suggests they could be up against it facing the in-form Devonians.
Huddersfield Town to beat Bromley @ 4/7
Huddersfield have enjoyed an unbeaten start to their League One season, and look a dependable side capable of great consistency under talented rookie, Martin Drury.
The Terriers are playing some smooth football, with ball-playing defender Radinio Balker seeing the benefits of full fitness at one end, and at the other, Joe Taylor linking up superbly with Bojan Radulovic.
This summer’s recruitment has certainly been Town’s best since coming down from the Championship in 2024, with Ilias Bronkhorst and Sanches Fernandes making big impacts after joining from Excelsior.
Hosts Bromley were hoping to foster a siege mentality at Hayes Lane, and be a difficult team to beat, but that hasn’t materialized just yet: in fact, the Ravens have shipped 16 goals in their last four games.
Tranmere Rovers to beat Exeter City @ 21/10
Tranmere suffered their first defeat of the season last time out, losing 2-0 at Gillingham, but that was a game that could have gone either way and there were still some positives for Darrell Clarke’s side.
The right-sided trio of Joel Senior, Tom Ince and Dylan Jones looks a real strong point for Rovers, and I see them having a lot of joy there against Rekeem Harper and Luca Woodhouse.
Plus, the visitors have a forward with searing pace in Zane Okoro, who enjoyed a lively impact off the bench at Priestfield last time out, and looks like he can bring bags of talent to this side.
The hosts only have a solitary win to their name, that coming at home to lowly Accrington Stanley, and they failed to hit the target in last weekend’s 1-0 loss at Port Vale.
Grimsby Town to beat Crawley Town @ 12/25
Last weekend’s 2-0 win over then-leaders Bristol Rovers felt pivotal for Grimsby: had they lost, they’d have been winless since the opening day, whereas with a win they can relish being unbeaten!
It wasn’t just the result for David Artell’s side, with their head coach being especially process-driven, it was the performance: the Mariners were dominant in their victory, and controlled the game so well that their opponents could only muster a paltry three shots.
The display was rewarded with a new contract for key midfielder David Geza Turi, who played well enough to displace George McEachran last season, and will now be catching the eye of clubs much higher up the pyramid.
Visitors Crawley might well be envious of the style Grimsby play, and their ability to develop players and sell them on for profit, but what the Mariners get right, that their visitors don’t, is culture: therein lies the key.
