Former England U21 international completes AFC Wimbledon move

AFC Wimbledon have wrapped up a loan deal to sign Portsmouth goalkeeper Joe Bursik.

The 26-year-old joins on a season-long loan from Fratton Park after making 10 Championship starts for Pompey in 2025/26.

Bursik rejoins Wimbledon almost a decade on after leaving their academy setup to join Stoke City. Amongst various loan spells, Bursik featured 53 times for the Potters before signing for Belgian outfit Club Brugge when Scott Parker was in charge of Blauw-Zwart.

The London-born shot-stopper began the 2021/22 season as Stoke's first-choice goalkeeper before suffering an injury whilst playing for England U21s.

He failed to make an appearance for Club Brugge's first team, however, did play for Club NXT -- the club's youth academy side that plays in the Belgian second tier -- prior to sealing a temporary switch to Scottish Premiership side Hibernian.

"AFC Wimbledon are pleased to confirm the signing of goalkeeper Joe Bursik on loan from Portsmouth until the end of the season," read a statement released by Wimbledon on the club's website.

"Bursik returns to where it all began for him, having been a part of the AFC Wimbledon Academy from the age of eight.

"He progressed through the ranks in South West London, before earning a move to Stoke City at the age of 16.

"During his time with the Potters, he gained valuable experience training with seasoned Premier League pros and on multiple loan moves across different divisions.£

Wimbledon make the trip to Burton Albion on Wednesday for what will be their fourth League One game of the season. Opening day defeat to Huddersfield has so far been followed up with a draw and a win against Reading and Wigan respectively; leaving them 14th in the division.

Nathan Bishop and Joe McDonnell have shared the minutes between the sticks for the Dons so far this season, with Bishop dropped following the aforementioned 3-0 loss to Huddersfield on the first day of the campaign.

The Dons are currently 6/5 to suffer relegation - the shortest price of any third tier team.
