Copa America: Dates, schedule, format, how to watch, previous winners, stadiums & teams

Argentina successfully defended the Copa America title in the United States in 2024 and have four more years as champions, with the next edition of the tournament set to take place in 2028.

Copa America dates

While the dates have not been set in stone for the next edition of the Copa America, it is likely to take place in June and July of 2028, potentially at the same time as that summer's Euros.

Copa America teams

The 10 CONMEBOL teams and guests will take place in the tournament.

The 10 CONMEBOL teams are as follows:

  • Argentina
  • Brazil
  • Bolivia
  • Chile
  • Colombia
  • Ecuador
  • Paraguay
  • Peru
  • Uruguay
  • Venezuela

The expanded 2024 Copa America also included six teams from CONCACAF:

  • Canada
  • Costa Rica
  • Jamaica
  • Mexico
  • Panama
  • United States

Copa America venues

The host country has not yet been confirmed for the Copa America in 2028.

However, it is likely to be either Ecuador or a joint bid between Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay as they build up to part-hosting World Cup 2030.

Copa America how to watch

With the next edition of the Copa America four years away at the time of writing, broadcast details are yet to be shared.

Copa America format

The 2028 Copa America is likely to retain the format they had in the 2024 edition, with four groups of four teams battling it out before the top two from each section progress to the quarter-finals.

The winners of those games will then compete in the semi-finals, a third-place playoff and eventually the final.

Copa America history

Starting back in 1916, the Copa America was originally created to determine the champion of the South American nations.

Since the 1990s, teams from both North America and Asia have also been invited to feature in the competition.

Argentina are the most successful nation in the competition's history, having won it on 16 occasions ahead of Uruguay's 15.

Surprisingly, considering they have won the World Cup on a record five occasions, Brazil are the third-most successful team with nine Copa America titles.

Paraguay, Chile and Peru have all won the tournament twice, with Bolivia and Colombia being crowned champions once in their histories.

Argentina have won back-to-back titles after lifting the trophy in 2021 and 2024, either side of their World Cup 2022 success in Qatar.
