Premier League and EFL football clubs owned by celebrities

Over recent years, it's become increasingly common to see Hollywood A-listers hitting the headlines for purchasing a football club.

Celebrities investing in football is not a new craze. Elton John became club chairman of his beloved Watford all the way back in 1976 and Delia Smith was the majority owner of Norwich City for 27 years until August 2024.

There's certainly been an increase in star names from across the pond putting their money into the beautiful game, especially on these shores.

We've taken a look at the celebrities who own or have a stake in a Premier League or Football League club.

Wrexham – Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds

Arguably the most high-profile celebrity takeovers, plenty of eyebrows were raised in February 2021 when Hollywood duo Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds received formal approval from Wrexham's Supporters' Trust to proceed with their £2 million purchase of the Welsh outfit.

One of football's oldest clubs, Wrexham were loitering in the National League for a 14th successive season at the time of the takeover. The transformation since has been extraordinary.

The unlikely marriage between Hollywood and Wrexham has been a match made in heaven, resulting in the club receiving global attention and, more importantly, revitalising the local community while bringing success on the pitch.

Wrexham won three successive promotions from the National League to the Championship, with the Red Dragons appearing in the second tier of English football for the first time since 1982.

Bournemouth – Michael B. Jordan

American actor and director Michael B. Jordan became a minority owner of AFC Bournemouth in December 2022 after joining the Black Knight Football Club consortium, fronted by Cherries chairman Bill Foley.

Jordan has played a key role in the global marketing of Bournemouth and even designed a special edition kit for the club ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

Bournemouth have established themselves as Premier League regulars under the ownership model, achieving their highest-ever top-flight points total with Andoni Iraola at the helm last season.

"I saw a team with a lot of potential and a lot of growth and I love their story," Jordan said in an interview with TST.

"I love the team's history so [it is great] to be able to be a part of that new storytelling and give the team some new energy with Bill Foley. He is a great partner and he has that win-by-any-means necessary attitude."

Liverpool – LeBron James

LeBron James acquired a 2% stake of Liverpool for £4.7m in 2011 and the NBA legend became a minor partner in Fenway Sports Group, the conglomerate which owns the Reds along with several major US sporting teams including MLB's Boston Red Sox and NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins.

The decision to invest in Liverpool has proven to be a shrewd business move for James, with his 2% stake now worth $107m according to Forbes' most recent valuation of the club.

Birmingham City – Tom Brady

Knighthead Capital Management's takeover of Birmingham City in July 2023 resulted in NFL icon Tom Brady purchasing a 3.3% minority stake in the Blues in August 2023.

Becoming the chairman of the club's advisory board, Brady has worked collaboratively with Birmingham's sports science department to enhance player nutrition, fitness and recovery.

The involvement of the former New England Patriots quarterback also extends to global commercial opportunities, with Brady helping to improve the club's visibility in the US.

Brady will be fronting a new Prime Video documentary called 'Built In Birmingham'.

Swansea City – Snoop Dogg and Luka Modric

Snoop Dogg is the latest Hollywood star to invest in a Football League club after it was confirmed that the iconic rapper had acquired a minority stake in Swansea City in July 2025.

News of Snoop Dogg's involvement with Swansea follows Luka Modric's investment in the South Wales club after the 2018 Ballon d'Or winner purchased a stake in April.

"My love of football is well known, but it feels special to me that I make my move into club ownership with Swansea City," Snoop Dogg said on the club's website.

"The story of the club and the area really struck a chord with me. This is a proud, working class city and club. An underdog that bites back, just like me.

"I'm proud to be part of Swansea City."
