Everton 'keen on signing' Newcastle United winger in bid to strengthen attack

Everton are reportedly weighing up a move to sign Newcastle United winger Jacob Murphy as they look to strengthen their forward line.

Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie broke the news that the Merseyside outfit are 'keen on signing' the 31-year-old, who has just 12 months left on his existing deal at St James' Park.

The winger is amongst 'a number' of options being considered by Everton, while the return of former loanee Jack Grealish hasn't yet been ruled out after his 12-month spell with the club was cut short due to injury.

The Toffees are yet to make a bid for the Newcastle man, but 'interest is there' and it's one to keep an eye on in the coming weeks.

Premier League

Murphy has enjoyed quite the journey since leaving Norwich City to join Newcastle in 2017, but it wasn't until the 2023/24 campaign where he started to deliver for the Magpies on a regular basis.

The winger scored three goals and registered eight assists in the top-flight, benefiting from more minutes due to the fact that the club were playing in the UEFA Champions League for the first time since the 2002/023 term.

The 2024/25 season saw Murphy play an even bigger role at St James' Park, notching 20 Premier League goal involvements and recording the assist for Alexander Isak as Newcastle beat Liverpool 2-0 in the EFL Cup final to end their 70-year trophy drought.

While for Newcastle fans he's more of a cult hero than someone who can put up top numbers on a regular basis, he has been essential to the club's more recent success.

With that said, the 31-year-old may be a player that the North East outfit are looking to move on with just a year left on his contract.

Anthony Gordon has already departed to Barcelona in a deal worth £70m, while Bazou Toure has joined the Magpies for a fee in the region of £42m, and so you get the impression that an attacking revamp is underway at St James' Park.

Should Everton make their interest in Murphy concrete, it'd surprise few if he was the next player out of the door.
