Launched in 1971, the UEFA Cup was an opportunity for more of Europe's elite clubs to compete in an intercontinental tournament.
Initially a knockout competition, the competition was rebranded in 2009, using a round robin format prior to a knockout stage.
Prior to the 1997/98 season, the final was contested over two legs, moving to one leg at a neutral ground for the 1998 final onwards.
