All eyes will be on Armand 'Mondo' Duplantis in Brussels on Friday night to see if another pole vault world record will fall, but Greek sensation Emmanouil 'Manolo' Karalis will be looking to cause an upset in the Diamond League showpiece.
Swedish superstar Duplantis has dominated the Diamond League and pole vault in its entirety over recent years, but this campaign has witnessed a genuine challenger to his supremacy in the shape of Karalis.
In the final series meeting of the 2026 Diamond League in Zurich, history was made as Karalis cleared 6.20m while Duplantis went over 6.25m. It was the first time in pole vault history that two men had cleared 6.20m at the same competition.
Karalis even made an audacious attempt at clearing 6.32m, which would have snatched the world record from Duplantis if he'd been successful.
Six days before their enthralling showdown in Zurich, Karalis had pushed Duplantis all the way at the Diamond League meeting in Lausanne before the Swede eventually prevailed at 6.21m.
The pair have made clearing the 6m bar appear ordinary, and Karalis' desperation to compete with Duplantis is driving him to scale new heights.
Reflecting on his personal best 6.20m in Zurich, Karalis said: "It's good at those heights, it breaks mental barriers.
"I'm extremely grateful for Mondo, as a friend and as an athlete, because he's made all the athletes break the mental barriers of those great heights – 6.10, 6.20, 6.30, it's just unbelievable what happened tonight [that] I was able to attempt those heights.
"I will see the videos to see if I was close or not, but that motivates me to attempt to jump those heights again."
Duplantis has won five successive Diamond League titles and the 26-year-old knows he will have to be operating at his very best to ensure he's celebrating a sixth triumph on Friday night.
The Swede is the odds-on favourite at 1/14, while Karalis is priced at 8/1 to dethrone the vaulting superstar.
