Defending French Open champion Carlos Alcaraz has confirmed he will be unable to defend his title this year due to injury.
In a statement posted on his official X channel, the Spaniard said: "After the results of the tests carried out today, we have decided that the most prudent thing is to be cautious and not participate in Rome and Roland Garros, while we wait to assess the evolution to decide when we will return to the court.
"It's a complicated moment for me, but I'm sure we'll come out stronger from here."
The 2024 and 2025 champion pulled out of the Barcelona Open after sustaining an injury to his right wrist in his tournament opener and subsequently withdrew from this week's Madrid Open.
Speaking earlier this week, the world number two had described his injury as "more serious than any of us expected" and his worst fears have been confirmed with him now unable to complete what would have been an historic hat-trick in Paris.
It will be the first Grand Slam tournament without Alcaraz since the 2023 Australian Open when he sustained a hamstring issue in training and was forced to withdraw.
Jannik Sinner overcame Alcaraz in a thrilling Monte-Carlo Masters final earlier this month to reclaim the world number one ranking and the Italian is now the strong favourite to complete the Grand Slam set and add a French Open title to his already glittering CV.
Sinner was on the verge of being crowned French Open champion last year as he led by two sets in the final against Alcaraz at Roland Garros, only to relinquish his lead and spurn three championship points as the Spaniard produced one of the greatest comebacks in Grand Slam history.
