Carlos Alcaraz will be aiming for a return to title winning form when the home favourite competes on the clay courts of Barcelona this week, where the 22-year-old has already secured two titles in recent years.
A stinging loss to rival Jannik Sinner has seen seven-time major champion Alcaraz slide to second in the world rankings for the first time in almost six months, however the Italian ace isn't competing in Barcelona, which opens the door for the Spaniard to secure a return to the top of the world rankings.
Victory in Barcelona will see Alcaraz resume the mantle of the men's number one and the 22-year-old has been aided by the withdrawal of 2024 champion and clay specialist Casper Ruud.
Alcaraz was back-to-back champion in Barcelona in 2022 and 2023 before Scandinavian duo Ruud and Holger Rune were triumphant in 2024 and 2025 respectively.
The event is an ATP 500 level tournament which means 500 tour points are up for grabs for the winner; Alcaraz will move marginally above Sinner if he secures the 500 points, anything less and he will remain second in the rankings.
The draw looks to be relatively kind for Alcaraz, who is set to face Andrey Rublev in the quarter-finals, and one of Alex de Minaur or Britain's Jack Draper in the final four.
Alcaraz is the early favourite to secure the ATP 500 title on home soil, which would set him up nicely to defend his French Open crown in Paris next month, which he is 5/4 favourite to achieve.
British duo Draper and Cameron Norrie are both competing in Barcelona and will hope to put together a run of form ahead of the French Open next month.
Both men fell in the fourth round in Paris last year in their quest to be the first male British French Open champion since Fred Perry way back in 1935.
Draper is 25/1 for Roland Garros success, while Norrie, who slipped down to 91st in the world last year before surging back into the top 30, is a 200/1 outsider.
