Four contenders to replace Brendon McCullum as England head coach

Brendon McCullum's stint as England head coach appears to be coming to an end.

Initially, the Kiwi did a brilliant job to breathe life back into a failing England Test side but recent series losses to Australia and New Zealand have brought his position under intense scrutiny.

Aside from the on-pitch results, major flaws relating to the culture of the England setup under McCullum's watch have been unearthed in recent months with multiple scandals grabbing the attentions of headline writers.

His captain, Ben Stokes, recently announced his retirement from international cricket amid rumours of a fall out with the hierarchy and, if that is the case, then you can't say the signs weren't there. Stokes clearly defied McCullum's 'Bazball' approach during last winter's Ashes defeat to Australia and the coach's refusal to back Stokes as captain when he was under investigation for a 'breach of team protocol' may have been the final nail in the coffin.

Should 'Baz' depart, we take a look at the options available to England...

Justin Langer

An Australian in place as head selector is enough to make some England fans recoil and the added extra of an Aussie head coach is a very realistic possibility.

Justin Langer had a very tough job when taking over as Australia coach in the wake of the infamous 'sandpaper scandal' but oversaw an extremely successful period in charge.

The 55-year-old former opening batter coached the 2021 side that won the T20 World Cup and Ashes.

Eoin Morgan

Eoin Morgan claimed that the "timing was not right" when linked the role in 2023 but three years down the line, that may have changed.

Morgan would be a slightly left field appointment given his lack of experience in coaching, however, he led England with distinction when captain of the white-ball team from 2014-2022.

Irish-born, the former Middlesex batter is arguably the greatest captain England have ever had, leading the side to their maiden ODI World Cup victory in 2019.

Aside from his clear tactical aptitude, Morgan also led on completely changing England's white-ball mindset and his strong leadership would be of great importance now.

Jonathan Trott

"I'd love to one day, hopefully, have the opportunity to coach a team that you hold so dear to your heart."

It is no secret that Jonathan Trott harbours ambitions of coaching England and after performing so well with Afghanistan, many think he has earned that right.

Trott was an absolutely fantastic batter when playing for England and has shown a clear talent for coaching. In three-and-a-half-years with Afghanistan, Trott led them to sixth in the 2023 ODI World Cup as well as the semi-finals of the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Andrew Flintoff

Andrew Flintoff is not just adored by the cricketing fraternity, but also by the wider British public.

His celebrity has grown so much since retiring due to several high profile TV gigs, it is very easy to overlook the fact that he is a very good coach.

The legendary all-rounder was recently unveiled as new head coach of BBL side Sydney Thunder, a role he will perform simultaneously alongside his responsibilities as coach of England Lions.
