Chelsea have made a blistering start to life under Xabi Alonso, scoring three goals against Fulham and four against Brighton, denied top spot in the Premier League by goal difference.
While Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen were strong at the back in their unbeaten Bundesliga-winning season, the Blues are taking some time adjusting defensively, shipping five goals in their first two outings, making for enthralling encounters if nothing else.
bet365's Steve Freeth said: "I haven't exactly rushed to watch Chelsea matches over the last year or so, but I had the popcorn ready this weekend after their showing at Fulham in their first Premier League outing under Xabi Alonso, and I wasn’t disappointed.
"That mouth-watering front three of Pedro, Palmer, and Rogers will cause carnage this season, and we’re 33/1 about the Stamford Bridge side breaking the record for the most goals scored in a Premier League season, currently held by Manchester City, who bagged 106 in the 2017/18 campaign."
It's of course worth noting that Chelsea have largely been without Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez for their opening two games, with the Ecuadorian midfielder struggling with injury, and the vice-captain's future uncertain amidst speculation around a potential move to Manchester City.
In contrast to their defensive frailties, Chelsea have been scintillating going forward. Against Fulham, the rejuvenated front three of Joao Pedro, Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer all got on the scoresheet inside 50 minutes and it was a similar blitz against Brighton.
Alonso's men bagged three in little over half an hour via Romeo Lavia, Pedro and Pedro Neto before Palmer put the tie to bed in the 74th minute.
With no European football, Chelsea should be fit and fresh throughout the campaign. Sterner tests are still to come -- namely Arsenal away next Sunday -- but the early signs at Stamford Bridge are very encouraging.
