Carlos Alcaraz booked his place in the 2026 US Open quarter-finals with a 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Tommy Paul on Sunday night.
Alcaraz was set to enter the tournament as the third seed after a near five-month layoff through injury, but Jannik Sinner's withdrawal saw the 23-year-old head to New York as second seed.
The reigning champion brushed past Russia's Roman Safiullin in his first game back on the outdoor hard courts, before coming from a set down to beat Jaime Faria three sets to one in the second round.
Alcaraz has been flawless since his first set scare against Faria, defeating Wu Yibing and Tommy Paul in straight sets to earn a place in the final eight.

Alcaraz qualified for the US Open in 2020 but opted to withdraw due to injury, and so he competed in his debut campaign in 2021.
The Spaniard reached the quarter-finals in America, but he was forced to retire against Felix Auger-Aliassime in the final eight clash due to a muscle injury in his right leg, seeing the Canadian advance to the semi-finals.
Alcaraz returned with a vengeance in 2022, dropping six sets in as many games to set up to set up a final encounter with Casper Ruud, where he emerged victorious to claim the world number one singles ranking for the first time.
He entered the following edition as the reigning champion for the first time in 2023 but fell to semi-final defeat against Daniil Medvedev, who went on to lose against four-time US Open winner Novak Djokovic in the final.
Alcaraz endured his worst tournament yet in 2024, succumbing to a shock 1-6, 5-7, 4-6 defeat to Dutch player Botic van de Zandschulp in just the second round in the Big Apple.
Alcaraz vs Sinner proved quite the rivalry in 2025 -- locking horns on seven occasions in the calendar year -- and it was the Spain-born sensation who emerged victorious in the final in the States.
Barring the second set -- where Sinner came out on top -- it was a ruthless performance from Alcaraz, winning three sets to one to clinch his second US Open honour.
