We take a look at the youngest tennis players to have won the US open since the Open era began in 1968.

Men's youngest US Open champions

Pete Sampras - 19 years, 0 months, 28 days

Pete Sampras defeated fellow American Andre Agassi to clinch his first US Open title in 1990, becoming the youngest player to win the honour aged 19 years, 0 months and 28 days.

He would go on to cement his legacy in his home nation by winning a further four titles, the last of which came 12 years after his initial triumph.

Carlos Alcaraz - 19 years, 4 months, 5 days

After crashing out in the quarter-finals of his inaugural US Open campaign, Carlos Alcaraz returned with vengeance in 2022 and became the second youngest player in history to win the competition by defeating Norway's Casper Ruud in the final.

Lleyton Hewitt - 20 years, 6 months, 13 days

Lleyton Hewitt defeated Andre Agassi in 2001 to win the US Open aged 20 years, 6 months and 13 days. While he featured in the competition on 12 occasions after his final victory, he was unable to add to his tally, striking close when suffering a final defeat at the hands of Roger Federer in 2004.

Women's youngest US Open champions

Tracy Austin - 16 years, 8 months, 28 days

Tracy Austin defied all odds when preventing Chris Evert from winning a fifth consecutive US Open in 1979. In the process, she became the youngest female player to win the competition, aged 16 years, 8 months and 28 days

Martina Hingis - 16 years, 11 months, 8 days

Martina Hingis' one and only US Open final victory came aged 16 years, 11 months and 8 days against Venus Williams in 1997. She reached the final in the following two editions, succumbing to Lindsay Davenport and Serena Williams respectively.

Monica Seles - 17 years, 9 months, 5 days

Monica Seles defeated four-time US Open champion Martina Navratilova in 1991 to become the then second youngest winner in history. She strengthened her credentials by defeating Arantxa Sanchez Vicario in the final the following year to become a two-time winner.
