Burnley set to beat Championship rivals to exciting Premier League talent

Burnley have reportedly won the race to sign highly-rated Sunderland winger Jocelin Ta Bi, fending off interest from West Ham United and Watford.

Championship

The Clarets have held a long-term interest in the 21-year-old Ivory Coast star but saw their hopes of landing him dashed when promotion-favourites West Ham made a move earlier this month.

However, Burnley's resistance has held strong, with the club expected to seal the temporary signing of the forward ahead of Tuesday's 11pm deadline.

Watford joined the Lancashire side and Hammers in the pursuit of Ta Bi, although despite agreeing a late deal with Sunderland, the player has opted to link-up with Nicky Hayen at Turf Moor.

The news, which was first broken by the Northern Echo on Monday, will come as a much needed boost to the Belgian boss who has endured a difficult start to life in English football with his new side having failed to win any of their three opening Championship fixtures.

A 4-1 thumping at Norwich City on Saturday came fresh on the back of a humbling EFL Cup defeat at Bradford City, whilst they had taken just one point from their two prior league games with West Bromwich Albion and West Ham.

Ta Bi's signing will be seen as a coup by Burnley officials, with the pacy frontman having caught the eye of Sunderland scouts for Israeli top-flight side Hapoel Petah Tikva.

But after joining the Premier League club in January, he subsequently made just two appearances as he struggled to force himself in Regis Le Bris' first-team plans.

He has been on the periphery of things at the Stadium of Light this summer, but was a notable absentee as they secured a 1-0 win over Fulham on Sunday.

It's believed the player completed the formalities of his switch to the Championship, whilst also undertaking his medical, over the past 24 hours, with official confirmation of the switch imminent.

Providing he is registered in time, Ta Bi could be in line to make his Burnley debut against Middlesbrough on Wednesday evening.
