New York Yankees and Chicago Cubs are set for an interleague showdown at Wrigley Field on Sunday afternoon.
This is the rubber match of this three-game series. New York took Friday’s matchup by a score of 2-0, while the Cubs won 5-2 on Saturday.
Both teams currently sit in second place of their divisions. New York is 3.5 games back of Tampa Bay in the AL East, while Chicago is 6.5 games back of Milwaukee in the NL Central. Both teams own the top wild-card spot in their respective leagues, so this is a matchup between two teams eyeing a deep postseason run.
In what should be a tremendous matchup to watch unfold, first pitch is set for 2:20 p.m. ET.
The Cubs were among the streakiest teams in baseball throughout the first half of the season. Prolonged winning streaks were followed by extended losing streaks, which made it tough to know what to expect from this team on a day-to-day basis. However, Chicago has been much more consistent in the second half.
Since returning from the All-Star break, the Cubs are a solid 9-6. Furthermore, they have not lost back-to-back games in that stretch. If they can keep it up, that consistency figures to serve them well down the stretch.
Chicago right-hander Colin Rea will toe the rubber in this one. Rea has been much better at home than on the road this season, as he owns a steady 3.33 ERA to go along with a 1.24 WHIP at home. In comparison, his ERA jumps to 5.93 and his WHIP elevates to 1.54 on the road. Going up against a Yankees lineup that has scored just five total runs over their last three games, Rea seems to be in a good spot here.
On the other side, the Yankees will hand the ball to Gerrit Cole. It took a few starts for Cole to get back into a rhythm after missing so much time over the course of the last two seasons, but he has come on strong in July. However, the road hasn’t been so kind to him. Most notably, Cole sees his BAA go from a minuscule .186 at home all the way up to .271 on the road. The Cubs rank fourth in the MLB with a strong .776 OPS at home, so Cole may have his hands full.
With plus-money odds of +110 on the moneyline, the Cubs are the team to back in this matchup.
The total for this matchup is relatively low at 6.5. With a solid pitching matchup on the mound and a pair of offenses in a bit of a rut, though, the under is the play.
Rea has been far better at home than on the road, and the Yankees haven’t been scoring many runs lately. As previously mentioned, New York has plated just five total runs over its last three games, and on the season, their team OPS drops from .757 at home (9th in MLB) to .698 on the road (20th in MLB).
After posting a less-than-ideal 6.12 ERA in five starts during the month of June, Cole was able to find a groove in July. The veteran right-hander posted a strong 2.97 ERA over five starts in July, and racked up an impressive 39 strikeouts to go along with just four walks in 30.1 innings of work. The Cubs have scored just nine total runs over their last four games, so it’s not like they are in a major rhythm at the plate either.
Even with this low total, look to the under.
