United States Women's National Team 2023 World Cup review

The 2023 Women's World Cup hosted by Australia and New Zealand was a massive disappointment for the United States. The Stars and Stripes won just one of their four matches, bowing out against Sweden in the round of 16.

The USWNT's one win was against Vietnam, ranked 37th in the FIFA World Ranking, in the group stage. Their second and third group stage games were a 1-1 draw with the Netherlands and a 0-0 draw with Portugal. The team scored four goals from 9.3 expected goals.

Since then, the US Soccer federation has made a coaching change and a plethora of the more experienced players - namely Megan Rapinoe and Julie Ertz - retired from international play. World Cup coach Vlatko Andonovski was fired, and Chelsea manager Emma Hayes - regarded as the best manager in women's soccer - will take over after the European club season ends.

United States Women's National Team World Cup history

No team can better the USA's record in the Women's World Cup.

The USA have featured in all eight editions of the tournament. Before their round of 16 exit in 2023, third place was their worst finish, occurring in 1995, 2003 and 2007.

They have won the World Cup on four occasions, claiming the inaugural title in China in 1991 along with the 1999 edition on home soil, as well as the last two tournaments in 2015 and 2019.

They finished as runners-up to Japan in the 2011 World Cup in Germany.

In total, the Stars and Stripes have won 40 of their 50 matches at Women's World Cups, drawing six and losing four.

The last World Cup in 2019 was the second time in history they won all of their matches in the tournament.

United States Women's National Team Gold Cup history

The Gold Cup, also known as the CONCACAF Women's Championship, has been kind to the USWNT. The Stars and Stripes have won the tournament that features North American and Caribbean countries all but two times, when Canada won it. The only time the USA didn't make at least the semifinals was 1998.

The 2024 edition of the tournament saw the united States defeat Brazil 1-0, thanks to a goal from Lindsey Heaps.

United States Women's National Team Olympics history

The USWNT has won five of the eight Women's Soccer tournaments in the Olympics, including the first-ever edition in 1996.

The team did not win in either 2016 or 2020, with Germany and Canada winning those editions, respectively. Under Emma Hayes, the team won its fifth gold medal in 2024.

The manager - Emma Hayes

Emma Hayes was announced as the replacement for Vlatko Andonovski late in 2023. Hayes has won the FA Women's Super League six times with Chelsea, including four straight leading into the current season, and she brought the club to its first-ever Women's Champions League final in 2020.

Hayes is regarded as one of the top managers in women's soccer due to her tactical knowledge and person-to-person management. She has never managed an international team, but she spent two years in the United States as the coach of the Chicago Red Stars from 2008-2010.

The sporting director - Matt Crocker

Matt Crocker is the technical director for the United States Soccer Federation, having previously worked in a similar capacity at Southampton FC in England.

He was named to the role in April 2023 and officially began working for U.S. Soccer full-time in August 2023. He was been involved in overseeing the team and played a role in the hiring of Hayes and the re-hiring of USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter.
