Svitolina vs. Swiatek: Preview, How to Watch, Odds

Elina Svitolina, the 2017 Canadian Open champion, is set to face Iga Swiatek in a highly anticipated semifinal clash in Toronto.

The Polish star is looking to turn her season around after a series of results that have fallen short of her high standards.

The WTA Toronto tournament has reached its penultimate stage, with a spot in the final on the line. The matchup between Elina Svitolina and Iga Swiatek, ranked eighth and ninth respectively, brings together two of the most formidable players on the tour, who share a combined 45 career titles.

Svitolina has a history of success at this event, having claimed the title in 2017 with a final victory over Caroline Wozniacki. The semifinal is scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, August 12.

Head-to-Head History

There's a compelling history between Elina Svitolina and Iga Swiatek, who have met seven times in their careers, often producing memorable encounters. While Swiatek currently leads the overall head-to-head record 4-3, recent results favor the Ukrainian.

Svitolina has won both of their meetings this season, securing victories at Indian Wells and the Italian Open. Her third win against Swiatek came at Wimbledon in 2023. Swiatek's victories date from 2021 in Rome to 2025 at the French Open, with additional wins in Dubai and Miami.

Elina Svitolina's Path to the Semifinal

Elina Svitolina has enjoyed a stellar 2026 season, re-entering the WTA top 10. Her year began with a title in Auckland and a semifinal run at the Australian Open, where she defeated Coco Gauff. Her form peaked on clay, where she captured her third career Italian Open title, overcoming Gauff in the final after eliminating Elena Rybakina and Swiatek in earlier rounds.

The 31-year-old from Odesa also reached the quarterfinals of the French Open before falling to Marta Kostyuk. Here in Canada, she has advanced to the semifinals with victories over Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, Anastasia Potapova, Amanda Anisimova, and Ekaterina Alexandrova, setting up another major clash with Swiatek.

Iga Swiatek's Journey in Toronto

For Iga Swiatek, 2026 has been a challenging year. The Polish player has lost ground in the rankings, currently sitting at world number eight and outside the top five. Following a quarterfinal appearance at the Australian Open, she faced several disappointing results, including a first-round exit in Miami and a semifinal loss to Svitolina in Rome.

Her struggles continued on grass, where the defending champion was eliminated in the third round of Wimbledon by Alexandra Eala. However, the 25-year-old from Warsaw seems to have rediscovered her form in Toronto, stringing together four consecutive wins against Sara Bejlek, Viktorija Golubic, Marta Kostyuk, and Diana Shnaider to earn her spot in the semifinals.
