After a challenging opening match, American star Ben Shelton returns to the court in Washington for a Round of 16 clash against France's Ugo Humbert.
The winner will advance to face either Terence Atmane or Alejandro Tabilo in the quarterfinals.
The Round of 16 at the ATP DC Open is taking shape, and among the standout matches is the contest between second seed Ben Shelton, a clear crowd favorite, and Frenchman Ugo Humbert.
The winner will secure a spot in the quarterfinals against the winner of another unpredictable matchup between Terence Atmane of France and Alejandro Tabilo of Chile.
Location: Court 4 at William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center, Washington, D.C.
Date: July 30, 2026
Time: 6:30 PM (ET)
Ben Shelton was pushed to his limits in his debut on the hard courts of the U.S. capital, narrowly defeating fellow American Martin Damm. The second seed showed signs of being far from his best form, ultimately clinching a hard-fought 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory.
It has been a season of highs and lows for Shelton, but his consistent rise in the ATP rankings, where he currently sits at world No. 8, has been a major highlight.
Also ranked in the top 30, Ugo Humbert currently holds the No. 29 spot. The Frenchman enjoyed a more straightforward start to his tournament, dispatching American qualifier Martin with a convincing 6-2, 7-5 win.
The 28-year-old from Metz has captured seven titles in his career and reached two finals this year, in Adelaide and Eastbourne, though he fell short in both. Nevertheless, he has consistently proven his ability to compete against any opponent on the tour.
Shelton and Humbert have faced each other only once before on the ATP circuit, with the American emerging victorious. Their lone meeting occurred earlier this year in the first round of the 2024 Australian Open, where Shelton won in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6, 7-6.
The player who advances from the Shelton-Humbert match will take on the winner of another exciting Round of 16 contest between Terence Atmane and Alejandro Tabilo.
Atmane pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the first round, eliminating another local favorite, Frances Tiafoe, with a thrilling comeback victory of 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. The Frenchman has always been a tough competitor on hard courts, a surface where he feels particularly comfortable.
Meanwhile, Tabilo, who typically prefers clay, managed to oust the formidable Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor in his opening match. The Chilean delivered a strong performance, winning a tight three-set battle 7-6, 4-6, 6-4. This will be the first meeting between Atmane (ranked 56th) and Tabilo (ranked 30th).
