In a battle of the two true best teams in the Western Conference this year, the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs square off in the Western Conference Finals.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is fresh off being announced the MVP for the second consecutive season, and his Thunder are fresh off an 8-0 start to this year's playoffs.
SGA reaction to winning MVP said it all. He was stoic and nonchalant, showing there's only one goal in mind: Become the first team since the 2017 and 2018 Golden State Warriors to win back-to-back championships.
The Thunder dominated the Phoenix Suns and Los Angeles Lakers in the first two rounds as SGA, Chet Holmgren, Ajay Mitchell, and the Thunder defense swept both teams with ease.
Mitchell, in particular, had a breakout series against the Lakers and has made OKC even more dangerous than people initially thought. With 2025 All-Star Jalen Williams out for the series, the lefty's rim pressure and attacking mindset had the Lakers on their heels throughout.
Mitchell averaged 22.5 points and six assists per game in that series, shooting 56.3% from the floor. Williams is now healthy and has the green light to play in Game 1.
SGA was subpar by his standards vs. LA (24.5 points per game), but OKC's guard depth and outstanding defense torched the Lakers even when he was off the court.
They will get a difficult matchup against a Spurs team that is somewhat similarly built.
Of course Victor Wembanyama is the outlier, but like OKC, the Spurs have long, rangy defenders and shooters on the perimeter, and rim slashers like De'Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle.
These two teams matched up five times during the regular season. Four were scheduled as part of the regular season schedule, and the fifth game was a matchup in the NBA Cup semifinals.
Four of the five matchups were decided by 10+ points, with the lone exception being a Spurs 111-109 win in December.
It should be a terrific matchup between two superstars facing their hardest matchup yet: SGA against Castle, Fox, Wemby, and the Spurs defense, and Wembanyama matching up against Holmgren and Isaiah Hartenstein with feisty guards always looking to poke the ball loose.
Game 1 starts tonight, Monday, May 18, at 8:30 PM ET / 7:30 PM CT / 5:30 PM PT. Let's take a look at the series odds and lines ahead of tip, with odds provided by bet365:
