Giannis Antetokounmpo’s first home game in a Miami uniform is behind him, and now the Heat get their second crack at their home floor. Miami hosts the Detroit Pistons on Friday, Oct. 23, looking for its first win of the season.
In the home opener, the Heat had no answer for Anthony Edwards. The Minnesota Timberwolves guard went off for 45 points on 29 shots and carried the Wolves past Miami.
The bright spot for the Heat was the debut of Giannis. The Greek Freak scored 35 points in 29 minutes, giving Miami fans exactly what they were hoping for.
The Pistons, meanwhile, got their first win of the season against the Boston Celtics. Detroit trailed early, then outscored Boston by 21 points in the second half to win by eight. Jalen Duren, Cade Cunningham and Duncan Robinson all topped 20 points in a fast-paced Detroit offense.
Last season, the Pistons had the best record in the Eastern Conference but lost in seven games to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the conference semifinals. After a long offseason, which included contract talks with Duren that were only resolved in early October, Detroit wants to build on that success and, with more experience, go further in the playoffs.
For Miami, the wait for a true franchise player is over. After years of going nowhere following the Jimmy Butler trade, the Heat finally have a clear No. 1 in Giannis and an even clearer goal: get back to the playoffs and compete in a stacked Eastern Conference.
