We are just a week away from the third Major of the golf year, but while world number one Scottie Scheffler and Masters champion Rory McIlroy have elected to swerve the Canadian Open, there are still plenty of players desperate to head to the US Open having claimed a valued PGA Tour title.
This will be the second year that TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley has hosted the tournament which was won by Ryan Fox last year when the New Zealander got the better of Sam Burns in a playoff.
The Ontario track will place great demands on accuracy and quality iron play, while it will be interesting to see how some of the players cope with fatigue after they were required to play 31 holes on Sunday to complete the rain-affected Memorial Tournament in Ohio.
Brooks Koepka knows exactly what it takes to claim the US Open and the two-time champion can enjoy a perfect preparation for next week’s examination at Shinnecock Hills by claiming his first success of the season in Toronto.
The 36-year-old has had an eventful year since he moved back to the PGA Tour after a spell playing in LIV Golf and while it took him a little while to get back into the groove, he has been competitive over the last few weeks and that should encourage a strong bid for glory here.
He has built upon the ninth spot he earned at the Cognizant Classic at the beginning of March, finishing in the top 20 in five of his seven subsequent individual efforts, including his 14th the last time we saw him at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson a fortnight ago.
Koepka is ranked fourth in strokes gained on approach and a player who enjoys the demands of tight challenges should be perfectly at home on the Ontario track.
Having won the US Open in 2017 and 2018 and finished in the top-20 in four of his six following tilts at that title, he should be bubbling nicely before next week’s trip to Long Island.
It is three years since Wyndham Clark added the US Open to his resume and while there have been times when he has struggled to live up to that achievement, there have been strong signs of life recently.
Clark, who gained a one-shot victory at Los Angeles Country Club, has plainly been lifted by the 21st he earned at The Masters after disappointing in the opening three months of the year.
He missed the cut at the PGA Championship, but bounced back the following week with a three-shot win at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson when he came home with a round of 60.
Clark will look back on the second-round 75 which left him one short of JT Poston and Ryan Gerard at the Memorial Tournament last week, but this looks another week where he can mount a strong challenge, particularly as five of the PGA Tour members in the top ten of the world rankings are resting up before next week.
Another American further down the list could make an impression after settling well to playing in PGA Tour company after graduating from the Korn Ferry Tour.
Johnny Keefer was third in the Texas Children’s Houston Open in March when he stormed home with a 64 and he produced another strong finish, a 63, when he was tied for ninth at the CJ Cup two weeks ago.
Those are strong performances for a player in his rookie season at this level and this looks the sort of test which could bring out the best of his talents.
He is ranked third in the Tour’s greens-in-regulation statistics and that points to Keefer giving some of the bigger names plenty to think about as they perhaps turn their attentions to the big tournament just around the corner.
