Bellerive Country Club hosts the BMW Championship this week as the top 50 players in the FedEx Cup standings get set to tee it up in St Louis.
Scottie Scheffler leads the way and he cantered to victory at the FedEx St. Jude Championship last week, winning by an impressive eight strokes over Si Woo Kim.
The American heads the market (+290), following that stunning win last week.
Rory McIlroy (+1500) remains his closest challenger, despite the Irishman looking out of sorts in Memphis. Xander Schauffele (+1700) and Tommy Fleetwood (+1700) will also run Scheffler close.
On recent form, is there anyone on the PGA Tour who deserves a win more than Sam Burns? The American has finished outside the top-12 on just one occasion across his last six starts.
He finished tied fourth at the Memorial on a tough Muirfield Village course, before settling for a runners-up spot at the US Open, again on a tricky Shinnecock Hills layout.
His game is perfect for the toughest tests and it is no surprise that Burns has recorded his three best major finishes this year.
The Open Championship, however, will be the one that got away. Leading by two entering the final round at Birkdale, Burns shot a disappointing 72 on Sunday, which was one of the worst rounds of the day.
At the FedEx St. Jude, he once again finished poorly, this time with a 73, yet Burns went round in 63 on Saturday as he finished in a tie for third.
Remarkably, he hasn’t won on tour since the WGC Dell Technologies Matchplay in March 2023. Given his recent form, he is edging ever close to a sixth victory.
Like Burns, Matsuyama enters the second playoff event as a man very much in form, but without a victory to show for his efforts.
He hasn’t finished outside the top-15 across any of his previous six starts, going 3-5-7-7 in recent weeks.
Last week, he didn’t shoot higher than 71 and he began the tournament with a wonderful 66. His irons were dialled in and he was impressive from tee-to-green, we just need an improvement on the putting surface and Matsuyama could return to the winners circle one again.
Matsuyama finished third at this tournament in 2021 and 2020, while the 2021 Masters champion performed well at the 2018 PGA, which Bellerive hosted. He finished T35, but only due to a poor Saturday that saw him go round in 73, made even worse by the fact he shot 66 on the final day.
The 34-year-old hasn’t won an official PGA Tour event since January 2025. Despite Scheffler being in full flow, if Matsuyama can get his putter firing, he is a match for anyone.
Adam Scott offers excellent value at +6000 this week, especially considering he is the only player in the field who has played Bellerive twice in official competition.
A tie for 50th at the 2008 BMW Championship wasn’t his finest performance, yet a decade later, the Australian finished third at the 2018 PGA Championship, just two shots behind Brooks Koepka who won the event.
Further encouragement comes from the fact that his record at this tournament has been solid since 2007. He finished second in 2024 and tied fifth two years earlier, with further top-10 finishes coming in 2019, 2016, 2014, 2012 and 2007.
Seven top-10s from 13 appearances is a more than respectable record and he should take confidence from his display at the FedEx St. Jude last week, where he finished in a tie for 12th at TPC Southwind.
Scott knows the course well and he thrives at this tournament. He is one to keep an eye on this week.
