The Seahawks dominated the Patriots 29–13 in the Super Bowl and will meet again in the opening game of the 2026 NFL season. This marks just the third time in NFL history that a Super Bowl rematch has occurred in Week 1, and the first time since 2016.

Seattle has lost key players from last season, most notably Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III, who will now lead the Kansas City Chiefs' backfield after signing as a free agent. The Seahawks also lost their special offensive coordinator, Klint Kubiak, who is now the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders. Seattle's formidable defense will also be without Coby Bryant, Riq Woolen, and Boye Mafe, all of whom will start the 2026 season with new teams.

The team drafted running back Jadarian Price from Notre Dame in the first round (32nd overall) of the 2026 NFL Draft to replace Walker, and re-signed cornerback Devon Witherspoon to a huge four-year, $132 million contract extension.

Although the Seahawks are coming off a Super Bowl victory, the team knows that the success of last year will not carry them through the upcoming season. Defensive lineman Leonard Williams stated, “I think everybody in the building understands that we have to start from the bottom all over again. To get to the top of that mountain, we have to start at the bottom.”

On the other side, Drake Maye and the Patriots will be eager to both win their first game of the season and hand Seattle its first loss of 2026.

New England has dealt with some off-field drama this offseason, but has bolstered its squad by signing wide receivers A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs, while retaining most of its key personnel on both sides of the ball.

Similar to Seattle, New England signed star cornerback Christian Gonzalez to a record-setting contract extension, making him the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history. Maye is likely to be the next Patriots star to receive a massive rookie extension when he becomes eligible next year. Maye finished second in the MVP voting last year in just his first full season, receiving just one fewer first-place vote than Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford.

A key matchup to watch in the opening game will be between Gonzalez against Seahawks wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba. As two of the best at their respective positions, both players signed massive contract extensions this offseason. Smith-Njigba won the AP Offensive Player of the Year award last season, recording 119 receptions for 1,793 yards and 10 touchdowns, but struggled in the Super Bowl when matched up against Gonzalez. The cornerback allowed only one completion in the Super Bowl—a 16-yard pass to Smith-Njigba—and recorded three pass breakups, including one on a would-be touchdown for the star receiver.

If Gonzalez can limit Smith-Njigba's production, the Patriots will be well-positioned to win the rematch. Maye will also need to navigate the Seahawks' defense and utilize his new targets effectively if New England wants to secure a road victory in Week 1.
