Patrick Agyemang has seen a meteoric rise in global soccer after beginning his career at Division III, Eastern Connecticut State University, but will have to wait to make his World Cup debut for the stars and stripes.
Agyemang was one of the top striker options for Mauricio Pochettino's United States men's National Team entering the World Cup, but the American suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon against Stoke City in the English Championship on Monday, April 6.
The Injury is quite serious for Agyemang, and he will be forced to rehab through the rest of the season and the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is co-hosted by the united States.
Agyemang began his professional career with Charlotte FC after being drafted in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft. In his first MLS season with Charlotte, Agyemang scored 10 goals in 34 games, and in 2025 he scored six goals in 16 matches.
Agyemang's impressive performances had European clubs circling, and in July 2025, the American made an $8 million move to Derby County in the English Championship, becoming Charlotte's highest-ever player sale.
Patrick Agyemang made his USMNT debut in January 2025, and scored in his first two games against Venezuela and Costa Rica.
Mauricio Pochettino has had nothing but praise for Agyemang, but the forward will not be available for the manager's 2026 World Cup roster due to his recent Achilles injury.
Although he's been impressive, Agyemang was unlikely to be Pochettino's first choice striker at the World Cup with a bounty of American forwards to pick from, including Folarin Balogun, Rico Pepi, Haji Wright, and Josh Sargent.
Balogun is expected to be the top choice at the position after enjoying a fruitful season with AS Monaco in the UEFA Champions League and Ligue 1. The 24-year-old scored 10 goals in 24 matches in Ligue 1, and five goals in 10 Champions League outings.
Agyemang offers a different and more physical profile than Balogun and the other forward options, but Pochettino will have to lean on the smaller and faster options at his disposal.
