Why Michael Olise Plays for France, Not England

The Bayern Munich winger, fresh off a sensational season with the Bavarian club, is now shining for France on the international stage, despite being born in England.

Michael Akpovie John Olise was born on December 12, 2001, in Hammersmith, London, into a multicultural family. His father is Nigerian, and his mother has French-Algerian roots, having been born in France. This diverse heritage made him eligible to represent any of the four nations.

Olise's journey with the French national setup began early. In 2019, after playing just four matches for Reading in the English Championship, he made his debut for the French U18 team. His progression continued, and in July 2024, he was named to the squad for the Olympic Games in Paris. Just a few months later, Didier Deschamps handed him his senior debut in the Nations League matches against Italy and Belgium.

Why Does Michael Olise Play for France?

Olise ultimately chose to represent France due to his mother's strong Francophone background. She was born in Algeria and lived in France for many years before her family settled in England. Olise's father, originally from Nigeria, also moved to the United Kingdom during his youth.

In his own words, Olise explained the connection he feels to his diverse roots and why France felt like a natural fit.

"I actually come from four countries," Olise has said. "France, Algeria, Nigeria, and England. I feel very fortunate to have these four roots, which enrich me. I feel every one of these parts within me; I have built connections in all my countries. Choosing France was a natural decision for me, as I grew up admiring the French national team and watching players like Zidane and Henry."

Olise has recorded five assists in six World Cup games this year, helping lead France to a semifinal appearance vs. Spain later today at 3:00 PM ET.
