The NFL will no longer going to feature an end of season Pro Bowl game, however the Pro Bowl honors will still remain.
The NFL has hosted an end-of-season Pro Bowl, or at least a version of it, since the 1950s. However, 2026 has marked the final year of the event.
In recent years, the Pro Bowl has faced criticism for failing to resemble a competitive football game or showcase the season's best players. An increasing number of athletes have opted to skip the game to avoid injury and begin their offseason early, despite still receiving the Pro Bowl designation.
The NFL intends to retain the honour, continuing to name players as Pro Bowlers, but is discontinuing the game itself and the requirement for alternates. Being named a Pro Bowler will now function solely as an individual performance award. While All-Star games in other sports have struggled recently, none have faced challenges as significant as the Pro Bowl, largely due to the sport's demanding and physical nature.
In place of the game, Pro Bowlers will be invited to an in-person celebration to accept their honours. The voting process will remain unchanged: ballots cast by fans, players, and coaches will be equally weighted to determine the selection of 88 offensive, defensive, and special teams players across both conferences.
