American Brandon Nakashima and Argentina's Sebastián Báez are set to face off in the first-round of the US Open, with both players bringing different streaks of form to the tournament.
Nakashima enters the Grand Slam on a high note, having delivered impressive performances at the recent Masters 1000 events in Montreal and Cincinnati. He reached the final in Montreal, where he was ultimately defeated by fellow American Ben Shelton.
Following that, he made a run to the semifinals in Cincinnati, only to be stopped by another compatriot, Frances Tiafoe. His strong summer also included a semifinal appearance at the ATP 500 in Washington, where Taylor Fritz ended his campaign.
In contrast, Báez has had a more challenging lead-up to the US Open. He was eliminated in the second round of both the Montreal and Cincinnati tournaments. His form improved at the Cancun Challenger, where he reached the final but was overcome by the tournament's top seed, Hubert Hurkacz of Poland, in a three-set battle.
Most recently, at the ATP 250 in Winston-Salem, Báez was forced to retire due to physical issues during his third-round match against Juan Manuel Cerúndolo while trailing by a set.
