The Chicago Fire will face Monterrey in the quarter-finals of Leagues Cup on Tuesday night.
The Chicago Fire have been in fine form since the start of August, winning six of their seven matches and drawing the other. The Fire won all three of their Leagues Cup matches against Necaxa, Santos, and Cruz Azul, scoring seven goals and conceding only twice.
They will meet a Monterrey side that has not kept a clean sheet in five consecutive games and has been far less consistent in its results. Monterrey won two straight games before a 0-2 defeat against León in their last three matches; this marked the first time they had won two in a row since February of this year.
This will be the first match in which Hugo Cuypers plays against his former club. The Belgian forward was leading MLS in goals before leaving Chicago to sign with Monterrey and has scored in each of his three Leagues Cup matches against MLS opposition this year.
Chicago will lean on the goalscoring prowess of Polish forward Robert Lewandowski and Philip Zinckernagel, while hoping that USMNT goalkeeper Chris Brady can keep Monterrey out of their net. Greg Berhalter's side is still without South African defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi, who is recovering from a thigh injury.
The Liga MX side will be missing rotational players Alonso Aceves and Uroš Đurđević, who are both dealing with injuries.
Chicago Fire will host Monterrey at SeatGeek Stadium on Tuesday, August 25. The match will kickoff at 8:30 PM EST (5:30 PM PST).
