Yankees vs. Orioles: Prediction, Props & Best Bets (8/20)

New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles are set for an AL East showdown on Thursday night at Camden Yards.

While these teams have very different records, they could both be playing playoff baseball. The Yankees are in a much better position, as with an overall record of 71-55, they enter this contest holding a comfortable nine-game lead in the AL wild card race.

The Orioles are five games below the .500-mark with a record of 61-66, yet they are just 1.5 games back in the chase for the final AL wild card spot.

After dropping the first two games of this series, Baltimore is looking to find the win column and avoid a sweep.

First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. ET.

New York Yankees vs. Baltimore Orioles betting picks and predictions

Yankees ML (-124)

This is a head-to-head matchup that the Yankees have dominated this season. New York is a strong 7-2 against Baltimore this season, and have taken the first two games of this series 3-1 and 5-3. Heading into the series finale, the advantage once again lies with the Yankees.

New York will send Gerrit Cole to the mound, and he is at the top of his game right now. After a rough month of June in which he posted a 6.12 ERA over five starts, Cole posted a 2.97 ERA in July and owns a stellar 1.93 ERA through three starts so far in August.

Cole has also seen great success against the Orioles throughout his career. In 15 starts against Baltimore, the veteran right-hander is 7-3 with a 2.39 ERA and 0.91 WHIP.

He also has a K/9 rate of 10.5 through 94.1 innings and is holding the Orioles to a measly .197 batting average. The Orioles have been held in check by scoring just four total runs through the first two games of this series, and Cole seems to be in a good spot to keep Baltimore at bay once again.

The Yankees also have a decisive edge when it comes to the bullpen. On the season, New York ranks 2nd in MLB with a bullpen ERA of 3.05. The Orioles haven’t had an answer for New York’s bullpen in this series, as Yankee relievers have allowed just one run through 10.0 innings of work.

The Yankees are a strong 40-28 on the road this season, and they seem to be in a favorable position to earn another road win in this one.

Under 8.5 (-115)

As previously mentioned, Cole puts the Yankees in a good spot to hold the Orioles to a low scoring total. He is back into a rhythm on the mound after missing over a year recovering from Tommy John surgery, and has dominated the Orioles throughout his career.

Kyle Bradish will oppose Cole on the mound. Despite a 7-11 record, Bradish has pitched well this season. He owns a 3.65 ERA and 1.36 WHIP through 24 starts, and has been solid so far in August. In three starts this month, Bradish is sporting a 3.00 ERA and has now allowed two earned runs or fewer in five of his last six starts.

The Yankees have been among the worst offenses in baseball in August. Specifically, New York ranks 26th in MLB with a team OPS of .651 so far this month. Bradish could be catching them at the right time.

With a total of 8.5, the under is the play.
