The Minnesota Twins and Chicago White Sox are set for an AL Central showdown on Sunday night at Rate Field in Chicago.
The White Sox have been one of the biggest surprises in baseball this season. With just a few weeks left in the regular season, Chicago is 74-68 and leads the AL Central by 2.5 games. They are in a great position to post their first winning season and make the playoffs since 2021.
On the other side, the Twins are 68-74 and barely hanging on to their playoff hopes. Minnesota is 3.5 games back of an AL wild card spot, so while they are not officially out of the picture, they have lots of work to do if they want to make a late run.
First pitch is slated for 6:20 p.m. ET on NBC.
Generally speaking, the White Sox have been a much better team at home than on the road. Chicago owns a record of 42-28 when playing at home, but is just 32-40 on the road. The White Sox also boast a strong .747 OPS at home, but that number drops considerably to .701 away from Chicago.
Taking the mound for the Twins will be veteran right-hander Bailey Ober. He faced the White Sox last weekend and pitched well. In total, Ober allowed just a single earned run on two hits over the course of 5.0 innings of work. However, he had the luxury of pitching from the comfort of his home ballpark in that contest. This matchup on the road could prove to be much more difficult.
Ober sees his ERA jump from a solid 3.16 at home to 6.20 on the road. Furthermore, his BAA goes from .209 all the way up to .299. With the White Sox being a much more dangerous offensive team at home, and Ober struggling to find consistency on the road, Chicago should be able to give him some problems in this one.
The White Sox are going with a bullpen game, with Bryan Hudson getting the start. The Chicago bullpen has been steady all season long, and ranks 6th in MLB with a 3.70 ERA. That reliability could prove to be extremely valuable as Chicago looks to win the series.
Playing at home, back the White Sox.
The White Sox didn’t do much against Ober last weekend in Minnesota, but they should be able to put forth a much better performance at the plate the second time around.
Facing the same team in back-to-back starts creates plenty of challenges, and as previously mentioned, the White Sox are a stronger offensive team at home. Look for Chicago to be aggressive at the plate en route to having a strong offensive day.
The Chicago bullpen has been effective all season long, but the Minnesota offense is off to a strong start in September. Specifically, the Twins rank 8th in baseball with a team OPS of .761 to start the new month. They’ve plated 28 total runs through four games despite hitting just five home runs in that span.
They aren’t too reliant on the home run ball, which makes them a bit more dangerous. All in all, the Twins should be able to score enough to take this one over the listed total.
With a total of 8.5, look to the over.
